FAQ
Below is a collection of common questions and answers about Arkanum and our coffee. If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Why Arkanum?
Arkanum means something secret, or a remedy with a secret ingredient.
We think that’s appropriate for something like coffee, which is also still shrouded in mystery and secrets. We want to bring that mystery a bit closer to you, and help to unveil its secrets.
Do you add anything to the coffee for the flavor?
No, we don’t add anything to our coffee. All flavors are from the coffee beans only, and we bring them out during the roasting process. Roasting light means that we avoid any flavors from the roasting, and instead let the beans’ own characteristics and flavors shine through.
Are your white bags light roasts and black bags dark roasts?
No, all of our bags are light roasts. The color of the bag is only a way to indicate our different categories of coffees.
- White bags are for coffees you may be familiar with or coffees that we think are more approachable. These are coffees that work for your everyday rituals.
- Black bags are for coffees that are more exclusive, rare or have experimental processes. These are coffees that may challenge what coffee is, or for moments that require something arcane.
How should I store my coffee?
To keep your coffee fresh, store it as whole beans in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. If you really want the coffee to last, you can store beans in the freezer for almost an eternity. Just be sure to use an airtight container to prevent moisture from getting in, the best is to freeze individual portions.
How long does coffee stay fresh?
For whole coffee beans, they are best enjoyed within 1-2 months of roasting. After this time, the coffee will still be drinkable, but the flavors will have started to fade. While the bags have a best-before date of 6 months, the coffee will often be safe to drink for much longer.
As soon as the coffee is ground, it starts to deteriorate much faster. We recommend that you grind it yourself before brewing, but if you buy pre-ground coffee it should be freshly roasted and consumed within a few weeks of opening the bag.
